If you’ve ever loved a pet, you know they’re a true part of the family. We want them to be happy and healthy, and the thought of them being ill or in pain is overwhelming. Most times, we know when there’s something off with our pets, but at what point should we be concerned?

Symptoms Your Pet Is In Pain

Although they can’t tell us directly, pets will show symptoms of being in pain.

Does he or she:

  • Drink or eat less for more than 1 day?
  • Limp or have unusual mobility issues (going up or down stairs, jumping onto furniture)?
  • Withdraw from family interactions or display non-stop neediness?
  • Seem less engaged in surroundings or toys?
  • Hide more than usual?
  • Sleep significantly more or less than usual?
  • Have unexplained aggression?
  • Stop grooming, or groom a specific area repeatedly?
  • Have a changed bathroom routine or go outside the litter box?
  • Cry, whine, growl or hiss more than usual?
  • Pant heavily or have dilated pupils?

What Should I Do If I Suspect My Pet Is In Pain?

First, it’s important to call your vet immediately. He or she will ask questions and either suggest that you bring your pet in for an exam, or he or she will give you advice for what to do/symptoms to be on the lookout for.

Keep in mind that pets are known for their resiliency and as long as they’re treated well and receive standard checkups and care, in most cases, the vet can treat your pet easily.

It’s always better to talk to your vet and get the answers you need rather than worry.
