When we think of heat stroke, it’s easy to forget your dog can suffer from heat stroke as well. Sadly, we see too many dogs suffer from heat stroke, so we want to remind you about this life-threatening condition so you can recognize the symptoms if it happens, and better yet, avoid it altogether. The quickest way for a dog to suffer from heat stroke is to be left alone in a car. Never leave your pets alone in a car – even for a few minutes.
What is heat stroke in dogs?
Dogs are more sensitive to heat and react differently than humans. Did you know that dogs have only a few sweat glands? These are located on their paw pads and around their noses. Unlike us humans, dogs “sweat” by panting.
When dogs aren’t able to cool themselves through panting, hyperthermia (and heat-related illness) can occur. Hyperthermia occurs when their core temperature increases above its normal range of 101-102 degrees Fahrenheit to 105 degrees Fahrenheit.
What are the symptoms of heat stroke in dogs?
Signs of heatstroke include:
- Heavy panting
- Rapid breathing
- Excessive drooling
- Dry mucous membranes
- Bright red gums and tongue
- Skin that’s hot to the touch
- Dilated pupils
- A high heart rate
- Hyperactivity
- Muscle tremors
- Difficulty maintaining balance
What should I do if I think my dog has heat stroke?
If you notice signs of heatstroke in your dog, it’s critical to help your dog cool down immediately by:
- Walking or carrying your dog to a well-ventilated, cool area.
- Spraying or sponging your dog with cool (not cold) or tepid water, especially on the underside. Do not immerse your dog in cold water.
- Call your veterinarian Your dog may need oxygen, intravenous fluids, medication, or other treatments.
