dog-with-allergies

Allergies are one of the most common reasons dogs experience chronic itching, skin irritation, ear problems, and discomfort. Our head veterinarian, Dr. Aaron Stamper, commonly jokes that “The Ohio river valley is a dermatologists dream!” because of how many irritants exist here. While some allergy symptoms may seem mild at first, ongoing inflammation and scratching can significantly affect your dog’s quality of life over time. Understanding the possible signs of allergies and knowing when veterinary care may be helpful can make it easier to keep your dog comfortable and healthy.

Quick Answer:

Dogs can develop allergies to environmental triggers, fleas, food ingredients, or other irritants. Common symptoms include itching, licking, ear infections, skin irritation, hair loss, and chewing at the paws. Some mild cases may improve with simple changes, while more persistent symptoms often benefit from veterinary evaluation and treatment.

Common Causes of Allergies in Dogs

Dogs may react to pollen, grass, dust mites, mold, or other environmental allergens. Symptoms often become seasonal but may occur year-round in some pets.

Some dogs are extremely sensitive to flea bites, and even a small number of fleas can trigger intense itching, skin irritation, and inflammation.

Certain proteins or ingredients in food may contribute to chronic itching, ear infections, digestive upset, or skin irritation. Diagnosing food allergies often requires dietary trials and veterinary guidance.

Ongoing scratching and inflammation can sometimes lead to secondary bacterial or yeast infections, which may worsen itching and discomfort.

Dogs with allergies commonly develop recurring ear irritation or infections. Redness, odor, head shaking, or scratching at the ears may occur alongside allergy symptoms.

Certain shampoos, cleaning products, fabrics, or environmental exposures may irritate a dog’s skin and contribute to localized itching or redness.

Common Signs of Allergies in Dogs

Dogs with allergies may experience:

• Excessive itching or scratching
• Paw licking or chewing
• Ear infections or head shaking
• Hair loss or thinning coat
• Red, irritated skin
• Recurring skin infections
• Face rubbing
• Hot spots – (our very own Dr. Stamper explains what this is HERE).
• Chronic licking or chewing behaviors

Symptoms may vary depending on the type and severity of the allergy.

When Are Allergy Symptoms Serious?

Veterinary evaluation is recommended if your dog:

• Is constantly scratching or uncomfortable
• Develops recurring ear infections
• Has hair loss or skin damage
• Experiences open sores or hot spots
• Has symptoms that continue worsening
• Seems uncomfortable or restless
• Is losing sleep or unable to relax due to itching – or is causing YOU to lose sleep! (We get it, the noise of gnawing and pawing can be a bother for pet-parents too).

Chronic allergies often become more manageable when addressed early.

How Veterinarians Evaluate Allergies

Because many conditions can mimic allergy symptoms, veterinarians may recommend diagnostic testing or evaluation to help determine the underlying cause.

Generally a veterinarian will be able to determine the issue during a Physical Exam. They will usually look over your pet’s ears and skin, discuss diet history, and learn from you what problems your pet has been facing. If these factors cannot give them a clear idea what is going on, they may recommend:

• A Parasite screening
• A Cytology or skin testing
• Additional diagnostics when needed

Treatment Depends on the Underlying Cause

Treatment recommendations vary depending on the type and severity of your dog’s allergies.

Possible treatments may include:

• Prescription medications
• Flea prevention
• Dietary changes
• Ear treatment
• Medicated shampoos
• Allergy management plans
• Treatment for secondary skin infections

Many dogs experience significant improvement once the underlying trigger is identified and managed appropriately.

How to Help Reduce Allergy Flare-Ups

While not all allergies can be prevented, the following may help reduce flare-ups and skin irritation:

• ✅Consistent flea prevention
• ✅Regular grooming and bathing
• ✅Routine wellness exams
• ✅Early treatment of ear infections or skin issues
• ✅Avoiding known triggers when possible
• ✅Monitoring for recurring symptoms

Yes. Dogs can develop allergies at almost any age, even if they previously showed no symptoms.

While allergies themselves are not always dangerous, chronic itching and inflammation can lead to skin infections, discomfort, and reduced quality of life if left untreated.

Treatment depends on the cause and severity of symptoms. Veterinarians may recommend medications, flea prevention, dietary changes, or long-term allergy management strategies.
